MARIA NILSSON WALLERis a freelance dance artist and choreographer. She was elected "Hoffningsträgerin" (bearer of hope) 2015 by Tanzmagazine. With work described as idiosyncratic, mesmerizing, pure, quirkily humorous and as poetry from the lingonberry forest she is a multidisciplinary artist who also composes the music for her pieces as well as designs light, video and costume.

Maria was born in 1984 in the Swedish town of Östersund, county Jämtland. Surrounded by music, she grew up playing various instruments and was strongly influenced by the traditional music of the region, as well as by classical and modern music. At the age of 15 she left home to pursue a career in dance, a passion she had already carried for many years. She graduatedfrom the Royal Swedish Balletschool in 2004. Around this time, while working as a freelance dancer, her interest in choreography and composition started to grow. This led her to further studies at Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, and from there to France. Between 2007 and 2009, Maria was part of Cannes Jeune Ballet where she choreographed several pieces for the company’s repertoire under the artistic direction of Monique Loudiéres.

Maria is based in Dublin where she continues to create as an independent artist, dividing her work between Ireland and Sweden, often in close collaboration with dancers, musicians, film artists and photographers.

Maria regularily teaches professional daile contemporary training at Dance Ireland, Galway Dance Project, Dance Limerick and Classical Ballet for the College of Dance, Dublin. Apart from this she has also together with drummer Magnus Vikberg completed over 190 workshops in contemporary dance for primary schools in the north of Sweden between 2012-2017 through Skapande Skola.

Maria has received commissions from Galway Dance Days (Founder, 2014), Dublin City Council (Journey, 2014) and Estrad Norr (Blanca, 2015). In October 2015 she premiered "See the Man" a piece for 35 professional footballplayers plus staff of ÖFK (Östrsunds Fotbolls Klubb, Allsvenskan, Sweden) - a unique collaboration between sports and dance.

Maria is a member of Jämtlands Kulturkompani and was a Dance Ireland Associate Artist 2013/2014. She has been supported by the Irish Arts Council, Dance Ireland, Culture Ireland, Estrad Norr and Konstnärsnämnden, Sweden.

She possess a richness in nuance and sharpness in detail [...] it brings poetic dimensions to her choreographies.

" The ungraspable in the waiting of the drop of rain to hit the palm of the hand" Det ogripbara i väntan på regndroppen mot handflatan.

"a profound, poetic piece where the shifting moods are given even more depth and immediancy by the on stage trio of musicians."

Last Land, The Herald,**** 13-08-06

"At once sweeping and elliptical, Maria Nilsson Waller's Last Land speaks to the act of creation in its every form, but especially to the creative act of the artist. Its rhythms and metaphors carry us over into a transmembered nature that is sometimes sublime, sometimes strange and homely and uncanny. The piece itself is often sublime, deftly invoking man's transcendental longings. It is a piece of great power and wit and even beauty."

" It is not wordless understanding, it goes deeper than that. Perhaps insight" [...]strax utanför det gripbara, vad jag ser. Inte ordlös förståelse, det går djupare än så. Kanske insikt.

"a highly physical piece with strength and precision, capturing the immensity and timelessness of the landscapes."

Last Land, www.threeweeks.uk.co, 2013

"En skönhetsupplevelse med styrka och konstnärlig helhet i uttrycket. […] både abstrakt och realistiskt med en spännande oförutsägbarhet. […] en föreställning med stark känsla av tidlöshet och oändlighet. " An experience of beauty with strength and artistic fullness in it's expression[...] Both abstract and realistic with an exciting unpredictability [...] A performance with a strong sensation of timelessness and infinity.

Last Land, Östersundposten, 12-09-21

"Lyhördheten mellan dansare och musiker är stor. […] I sina starkaste stunder ger Last land mig samma känsla som när jag överväldigas av min egen litenhet i riktigt storslagen natur. " |The dancers and musicians perform together with sensitive listening [...] In its strongest moments Last Land gives me the same feeling as when I am overwhelmed by my own insignificance in truly magnificent nature.

"with a silent and strong presence, summoning inner forces she creates a dreamy sensation of infinity"

"Maria’s movement quality is supreme and it is an utmost pleasure to watch her. Both her dance expression and technique are so refined it is hard to resist the charm of her solo. Pure and entirely mesmerising"

"De behärskar det väsenskilda rörelsespråket i förvandlingen mellan hemmafix och karriärstress. Hur de paljetterade förförerskorna som hämtade ur reklamens plastiga barbievärld ser så helt annorlunda ut än nyss intresserar och fascinerar.|[The dancers] have mastered those inherently different movement languages - between the activity of over-strained career ladies and pottering around the home. How the sequin-covered seductresses from the plastic barbie-world of commercials can look so different from just a moment ago interests and fascinates."
